Description
Doxazosin
Medication Overview
Doxazosin is a prescription alpha-1 adrenergic blocker used to treat hypertension and, in appropriate patients, urinary symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The approved uses depend on the particular formulation and local labeling.
How It Works
Doxazosin blocks alpha-1 receptors in smooth muscle. This relaxes blood vessels and can lower blood pressure. In BPH, it relaxes smooth muscle in the prostate and bladder outlet, which may improve urinary flow and related symptoms.
Approved Medical Uses
- Hypertension: Lowers blood pressure by reducing vascular resistance.
- Benign prostatic hyperplasia: The immediate-release formulation is used to improve urinary symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate.
Doxazosin does not cure BPH or shrink the prostate itself.
Formulation & Strengths
Immediate-release doxazosin tablets commonly contain 1 mg, 2 mg, 4 mg, or 8 mg. An extended-release formulation is also available in some markets for BPH. These formulations have different release characteristics and labeled uses; they should not be substituted without medical advice.
Side Effects and Safety
Dizziness, fatigue, low blood pressure, and headache may occur. A significant risk is postural hypotension, including fainting, particularly when treatment is initiated or the dose is increased. Caution is also needed when taking other blood-pressure medicines or medicines for erectile dysfunction because blood pressure may fall excessively.
Inform the eye surgeon before cataract surgery, as alpha-blockers can be associated with intraoperative floppy iris syndrome.
Dosage
Dosing depends on the condition, the specific formulation, blood-pressure response, and other medicines. The starting regimen and any dose adjustments must follow the product label and prescriber’s instructions.
Handling & Safety
Follow the package directions and take only the formulation prescribed. Rise slowly from sitting or lying positions if advised by your clinician, especially when beginning treatment.
