Finasteride is used alone or with other medication to treat symptoms of bening prostatic hyperplasia in men with enlarged prostate.Finasteride functions by decreasing the amount of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in your body. DHT normally causes prostate growth. The decrease in DHT prevents irregular prostate growth and also leads to increased hair growth and decrease hair loss on the scalp. Thus in addition to being associated with prostate growth, DHT is also correlated with male pattern baldness.
